Chicago, 2003

We had a wonderful time in Chicago during the last week of August. The weather mostly cooperated, and though the drive up and back was a pain, we managed to cram a bunch of stuff into our time up there. We stayed with Blair's aunt and uncle, Susan and Tom Stob, in suburban Naperville--their backyard neighbor is the busy BNSF triple-track mainline (so B and E were quite entertained!). Besides all the touristy activities, the purpose of the trip was the yearly Stob Family reunion. . . the first time Blair had seem some of his relatives in nearly 30 years!

Stuck in rush-hour traffic at the big interchange in St. Louis. Hey, at least there was a BNSF train to watch!

We tracked down the elusive "Superdawg" stand near DesPlaines, had hotdogs, then bought Eliot a souvenir.
We traipsed around the Illinois Railway Museum near Union. Great collection! Even a restored C&NW commuter train. Eliot was in heaven.
Cocktail hour at Uncle Tom Stob's: L-R: My friend Jamie Schmid (pink shirt), me, Tom Stob, my uncle Ned Van Dellen, aunt Grace Van Dellen (my mom's sister), Eliot, and my father, Lou. The BNSF mainline is right in the trees in the background.
An impressive view of the Chicago skyline--America's tallest building, Sears tower, dominating the view--from out tourboat on the Chicago River.
a view from the Hancock building of one of our future residences! Impressive wall of pricey condo high-rises along Lake Shore Drive and Lake Michigan. . .

eliot loved the view from 1,000 feet in the sky. . .
eliot and Mary loved the slow but scenic night time ride on the Navy Pier ferris wheel. . .

eliot was enthralled by the fireworks over Lake Michigan, seen from the Navy Pier. It was the last show of the summer. . .

Up in Kalamazoo on Sunday, Uncle Ed Stob dumps a 50 lb. bag of charcoal into his jumbo Weber grille. . .
Aunt Nancy Stob is pretty animated telling a story to Aunt Grace VanDellen (middle) and Carol Barbour. . .
